Oyster Group is a leading New Zealand commercial property and fund manager, with ~ NZ$1.8 billion in assets under management. The business specialises in property syndication, fund management, and asset management across office, retail, and industrial sectors. Headquartered in Auckland, Oyster delivers tailored investment opportunities to wholesale and retail investors, supported by deep market knowledge and an active management approach. Its portfolio includes landmark properties across the country, with a strong focus on long-term value creation and investor outcomes.

The driving force

Oyster Group engaged ClearPoint to assess its current technology and data architecture in the context of its long-term goals for growth, operational optimisation, and sustainability. With business information spread across systems including OPM, SharePoint, email, and Slack, the business recognised the potential to improve visibility, streamline reporting, and reduce reliance on manual processes.

Oyster aimed to move towards a more connected and insights-driven model that would support smarter decision-making, enable workflow automation, and create the foundation for exploring advanced analytics and emerging technologies. Aligning data architecture with business needs, and establishing a clearer strategic direction for data and technology, became a priority for enabling long-term optimisation and innovation.

The approach

ClearPoint conducted a two-phase engagement, with the first engagement being a current state review of Oyster’s technology and data landscape, evaluating its alignment to future business objectives. This delivered:

  • A summary of the existing architecture, observations, and key limitations.
  • Recommendations for digital optimisation, with a clear outline of dependencies.
  • A roadmap framework for future-state architecture and capabilities.

Following the initial assessment, ClearPoint identified a number of additional evaluation activities needed to shape an actionable transformation roadmap. These were completed through the second phase, with a proposal for a third phase to implement early-stage improvements. A phased engagement approach was used to reduce risk and validate assumptions before moving to roadmap execution.

A key recommendation was to establish a lightweight, cloud-based data platform as a prototype to begin resolving current reporting challenges, starting with a focus on Quarterly Investor Reporting. This would allow Oyster to progressively validate, refine, and scale its data architecture while addressing immediate needs.

ClearPoint also recommended development of a comprehensive Data Management & Analytics Strategy. This would define the principles, processes, and technologies required to manage data as a strategic asset, covering governance, security, and compliance, and establishing a foundation for continuous improvement and innovation.

The outcome

ClearPoint’s two-phase evaluation created clarity for Oyster around the structural and strategic changes required to realise its digital and data potential. With a defined path forward, Oyster is now positioned to:

  • Shift from system-centric to business-aligned data architecture.
  • Reduce manual effort and duplication in reporting and document generation.
  • Begin resolving fragmentation by prototyping a centralised cloud-based data platform.
  • Establish a Data & Analytics Strategy to guide governance, improve decision confidence, and support innovation.

This foundation enables Oyster to grow towards a more insights-led operating model, with the ability to harness emerging technologies as part of its ongoing optimisation and growth efforts.
